Finbarr was the beloved
pet of a long time owner of labs. For some reason this
animal stood out as exceptional, which moved the owner
to get a portrait done.
This was the first time
I had ever attempted such a thing - and she talked to me for
quite a while about the qualities and personality of Finbarr,
and gave me a few photos.
We both decided on the
profile as the picture with the most character, and the one
which would show up best in the grisaille technique. I did
it on mocha brown, as I felt that the traditional black
would be too stark. There are two layers of mocha on each
side (four firings) and eight layers of paint fo shading (8
firings) I then added an inscription on the back (one more
firing) for a total of 13 firings.
