Musicians were common subjects for classical
greek artists, and decorate many vases, amphora and kalyxes.
Classical Greece stradled both literacy and
orality in a way that was unique.
It embraced and valued elemts from both of these
methods of communication and produced extraordinary poets like Homer
and Ovid.
In oral cultures musicians (especially
poets/singers who told stories like this one) were highly valued and
enjoyed high status.
