Helen ('moon' or 'moon offerings') was famed for causing the Trojan War and known far
and wide for her great beauty. Helen was the fruit of Zeus' union with
Leda. She was eventually married to Menelaus - the richest of her many
suitors.
Their marriage was doomed because of a curse by Aphrodite, who had been neglected in the sacrifices proffered at her,
Helen's, birth.
Her ill-fated lover Paris also had been
prophesied at birth to be the cause of great destruction. He was also
dogged by Hera and Athene for his part in judging Aphrodite more
beautiful than either of them in a contest of beauty.
On Aphrodites' prompting, he eloped with Helen,
but their troubles began almost immediately as Hera and athene plotted
against them.
