The bee, found in Ancient Near East and Aegean cultures, was believed to be the sacred insect that bridged the natural world to the underworld.
The Delphic priestess was often referred to as a bee, and she remained "the Delphic bee" long after Apollo had usurped the ancient oracle and shrine.
The bee was an emblem of Potnia an ancient Minoan-Mycenaean goddess. Her priestesses received the name of "Melissa" ("bee").Priestesses worshipping Artemis and Demeter were also called "Bees".
Bee motifs are also seen in Mayan ruins, likely designating honey-producing cities
The Mayans prized honey, like most cultures, as the food of the
gods.
In Celtic myth, bees were regarded as beings of great wisdom and spirit messengers between worlds. Honey was treated as a magical substance and used in many ancient magical rituals. Honey made into mead was endowed with prophetic powers.
