CLASSICAL
GREEK - Gorgoneion
|
The Gorgon, or Medusa, is a female head depicted as
particularly ugly with her eyeballs staring fixedly (highly unusual in
ancient Greek art). The beard-like appendage is probably meant to be
dried blood.
the Gorgoneion was an apotropaic (warding off evil) amulet showing the
Gorgon's head. It was associated with the deities Zeus and Athena;
both are said to have worn it as a pendant. It was also popular as a
royal aegis, as shown, for instance, on the Alexander Mosaic and the
Gonzaga Cameo.
It is meant to turn your enemies to stone
