While no-one
really knows what these abstract designs might have meant to
the artists who created them or the community within which
they were used.
It is
reasonable to suppose that these designs represented
abstractions from nature. Vegetal forms: leaves, vines, trees
may all have been models. This supposition is based on their
similarity to Greek models. Since the Celts had an oral culture the only
written records we have from this period are from contemporary
cultures who looked at the Celts from the outside - not always
understanding what they saw and often judging harshly by their
own standards.
It is also possible that they
represented elements like fire or water. I re-enforce this
interpretation by using colouring that suggests these elements
also playing with the characteristic negative space.
