CONTEMPORARY CELTIC
ART
The purpose of this talk is to increase
understanding of the place of visual art
in the Celtic culture. Like music, visual
art is a living tradition and many
artists are working with Celtic design in
new, interesting and contemporary ways.
There is a
grammar of ornament that most
Celtic artists work with that is defined
by historical artifacts that are
associated with Celtic culture. These
artifacts include the beautiful
illuminated manuscripts of the 8th-11th
century inscribed by monks in Scotland
and Ireland. Also included is the
metalwork and stone carvings of this same
period. For others it includes the
bronze, iron and stone work of
continental Celts from as far back as 800
BC
.The grammar includes first
and foremost interlacing (or knot-work)
and spirals but it also comprises, key
patterns, paisleys, curved sided
triangles, lozenges, animal motifs,
double and triple spirals, s and c
curves, and the extensive use of negative
space. While the motifs are limited - the
imagination never is and these elements
can be combined in infinitely new ways.
This lecture will include slides of
contemporary artists as well as images of
artifacts in order to show the sources,
and see the directions that artists have
taken.
