ACTIVISM
In North America in
general, but Canada in particular there is a severe
lack of appreciation for craftsmanship. It is my
belief that this comes from a lack of education.
Instead of addressing this lack, artists have often
obscured themselves behind barriers of elitism to
protect their own perceptions of quality.
The only way to address
this in my opinion is to expose people to more art -
and to help them understand it in its historical and
cultural context. All of the work I do organising exhibitions and
organisations that I work with must forward this goal.
Traditionally artists
have been at the centre of their communities,
creating culture by investing meaning in everyday
objects and events.
