Cloisonné is a
very different technique from my usual champlevé.
Whereas in champlevé, the metal is etched and the enamel
inlaid, in cloisonné the design is created with wire and the
enamel is built up on the metal. Typically cloisonné has many
more firings than champlevé (15-20 for the former, 5-7 for
the latter) and is consequently more expensive. The fine lines
create a more delicate and subtle design compared to the
boldness of champlevé.
