This five spiral design comes from an
8th century BC hill fort in northern Spain. The spiral
is the oldest known form of decoration done by
human beings. In most cultures around the world
it has special significance. It usually indicates
some kind of power, but archaeologists speculate
that it may have been inspired by rolls of
reaped grasses or hay.
The
five spiral is thought to be a symbol of the
quintessence. Many ancient people thought that
everything in the world was made up of the four
elements of earth, air, fire and water. The
quintessence was the fifth element that held the
other four together.
