THE
DAGDA - KING OF CLUBS
The
Dagda is a character from early
Celtic mythology. He was the
chief god of the Tuatha De Dannan, who were a race of gods
that ruled over Ireland until
they were banished beneath the
fairy mounds by the Sons of Mil.
"The Dagda" was a
nickname meaning 'the good",
but it had no moral connotations -
it meant he was good at things
i.e. skilled. His name was
Eochaid Ollathair The Dagda's
chief attributes were his club,
with which he could smite an
entire army in battle, and his
cauldron, which was always full
of food. Whoever ate from it was
always satisfied.
The design
inspiration for this piece was a
17th century playing card. It is champlevé enamel on copper with cloisonné and
bas-taille details
and gold and fine silver foils.
It is part of a series I hope to
do on mythological figures as
playing cards.
