This series is based on
images from the Bayeux Tapestry - which is not actually a
tapestry, but a piece of embroidery an astonishing 230
feet long. It chronicles the Norman invasion of England, and
is one of the few pieces of secular art from this period (10th
century). It represents a melding of many different artistic
styles. You can see the tapestry here.
See if you can find these trees!
I liked the Saxon
influenced interlacing of the trees - in contrast to Irish
knotwork, it is generally non-symmetrical. It does however have
a great deal of movement which I have attempted to emphasise
with my enamel treatment.
I have chosen to depict the
four seasons as they represent the important cycle that ruled
people's lives in agrarian times, and because it gave me scope
for playing with colour.
