BROOCHES - Whale
This whale is my own design and was inspired by images of the killer whale from Haida art in north western Canada. It is my humble tribute to that great Haida Artist Bill Reid.

Celtic art is essentially tribal in that it is filled with symbols that have particular cultural significance to the people of the 'tribe'. In the modern world, where traditional tribal affiliations are cut, and particuarly in North America where family roots are often hidden in a distant place and past, this connection with others is increasingly important.

It seems that whales were also revered in the Celtic culture. They were one of the 'Three Royal Fish of Britain' (from the Welsh Triads) along with the porpoise and the sturgeon. Of course we know that whales and porpoises are not fish - but early biology simply classified all that lived in the sea as 'fish'. In medieval 'biology', enshrined in the bestiaries, whales were called Leviathon where it was described as a fire-breathing, smoke-snorting, stone-hearted sea monster

All brooches can also be ordered as necklaces
