Because the Celts had a hero culture,
the hunt had special significance for them. It is
thought that the Celts may have believed in a
ritual hunt after death, just as the Egyptians
postulated a ritual boat ride. Interestingly, in
both cultures the crossing of water was
significant. The Celtic hunt crossed a
stream or river before passing into the next
world. This piece depicts the hare as leader
animal, but often in Celtic stories, the animal
was a white deer.
It is based on
a carved knife handle I sketched in the archaeological museum
in Ste-Germaine-en-Laye.
