In ancient times the Celts were found in
most of continental Europe: an area bigger than
Alexander's empire. From the Mediterranean to the
Arctic Circle, and from the Atlantic to the
Steppes of Russia there have been Celts (maybe
further - who knows?). Their legacy in the east
is left not only in archaeology, but also in
modern place names (Bohemia is named after the
Celtic tribe the Boii) This piece
is based on a Celtic artifact from Hungary and is
probably a raven or crow. (see also Crow) Birds had special
significance in most cultures, but for the Celts
they were used by the Druids in augury
(divination by watching the flight of birds), and
were thought to be symbols of the air element,
and the spirit or soul.
