The
motif of the salmon as the oldest and wisest of
animals is common all over Europe.
This fish is based
on a
inlaid Anglo Saxon piece from about the 5th c with typical
'stained glass' look.
In one Anglo-Saxon legend Alfred the
Great and his mother have identical dreams. Each of them in turn is visited by the spirit of St. Cuthbert, the hermit bishop of
Lindisfarne, who promises them that the Saxons will soon achieve a great
victory. He promises a token: namely that the local fishermen will return later in the day with a great catch of fish. This in spite of the fact that it was winter and the
rivers were all frozen over. It was soon found to be true. The fishermen brought in a huge catch, and it was not long before Alfred's army crushed the Danes.
