The cat in Celtic folklore is somewhat ambiguous.
Later stories associate it with witches, but this
often happened in Christian countries to animals
that had been sacred in pagan times. There is
also a character in celtic mythology called
Cairpre Cat head giving rise to the idea that
part of Celtic belief may have been a belief in
animal ancestors. This cat is based on one from
the pages of the Book of Kells, where it is
accompanied by a mouse, and the caption "and
the lion shall lie down with the lamb."
From
the Aberdeen
Bestiary (circa 14th c):
"...For it has such piercing sight that it
overcomes the dark of night with the gleam of
light from its eyes. As a result, the Greek word
catus means sharp, or cunning..."
