This piece is based on a 5th century BC
bronze brooch from Cisalpine Gaul (Northern
Italy) which was one of the centers of Celtic
culture at this time. I have inlaid cloisonné wires in a style called
'Waldalgesheim' or
vegetal which is slightly later and more fluid. The double
spiral is probably a sun/moon symbol, but the
vegetal designs are more elusive. Some say they
are abstractions of Greek vegetal patterns, and
others see them as representative of the restless
wandering spirit of the Celts.
The
shape is most often seen as that of a crab
