This piece is based on a
style that developed around 500 BC when the Celts were still a
formidable power in Europe. They were trading wine with the
Etruscans and were influenced by Mediterranean decorative
styles. At this time much of Greek decoration was plant based
tendrils, which the Celts abstracted and made more fluid.
It is called
the Waldalgesheim style by archaeologists - after the famous
grave site of this style from that part of Germany.
Curiously this style
developed at a time when there was a great deal
of movement among Celtic tribes, and may have
developed to reflect that physical fluidity which
must have occasioned social changes as well.
